Curiosity
Baratile San Pietro, in the province of Oristano, is a village of about 1,300 inhabitants. It was and still is the largest center for the production of Vernaccia wine. In our country the origins of a wine similar to "Vermouth" can be traced back to the Second World War, a period in which the production of Vernaccia reached an all-time low, since the workforce was at the front and the vineyards were followed by young people and old people. . To the lack of production was added the government imposition of the requisition of foodstuffs, including wine, thus favoring the birth of the black market. Baratici San Pietro was fully invested by this exchange of goods in kind and so all possible strategies were activated in order to hide the real production. The young wine was exchanged in terracotta containers of about 20 liters, which however guaranteed a limited shelf life for the product because they had a very large opening that was difficult to close. These containers were hidden in the most remote part of the courtyards and covered with bundles of wood. During the summer of 1945 my grandfather forgot some of these containers which were then found in the following winter. With great surprise they realized that the wine had not spoiled and that it had assumed a perfume and a bouquet full of floral notes. Perfumes and aromas that came from the cork, where spontaneous plants had developed including the "senecio serpens" responsible for the most intense aromatic part. My grandfather made his friends taste the wine as it was, but at the first tastings they were all rather dismayed. My grandmother intervened with a small addition of sugar and made everyone agree. Hence the idea of producing Vermouth Bianco in memory of his grandfather and of those times.
